Founded in 1957 by Tom Jennings in Dartford, Kent, UK, Vox took advantage of the British Invasion wave of the 60s, providing amplifiers to the nascent British rock scene. The need for more powerful and distinctive amplifiers prompted Vox to develop models capable of offering not only volume, but also a unique and recognizable timbre.
The VOX AC30, launched in 1958, is perhaps the most emblematic model in the company’s history. Thanks to its unmistakable warm and crystal-clear sound, combined with a natural overdrive when pushed to the limit, the model has won over legions of guitarists. With its vintage aesthetic and diamond front grille, the AC30’s design has become an icon in the amp world.
Curiosities and Little Secrets of VOX
Beatles and VOX The relationship between the Beatles and VOX wasn’t just commercial. The band used AC30s on stage at the famous concert at Shea Stadium in 1965. VOX, recognizing the band’s enormous popularity and influence, also created custom amplifiers for them, such as the now legendary VOX Super Beatle, which wanted to meet the need for more powerful amplifiers for large events.
The “Invisible” Amplifier A curiosity related to the famous appearance of the Beatles at Shea Stadium is that the amplifiers used were not the only ones to project the sound to the more than 55,000 fans present. Due to the limited power of the amplifiers at the time and the incredible volume of the crowd, the sound was actually amplified through the stadium’s PA system as well, an uncommon practice for rock concerts at the time.
